Limiting oxygen index test according to UNE-EN ISO 4589-2

Example image

The objective of the test is to determine the minimum volumetric fraction of oxygen, mixed with nitrogen, that will support the combustion of small vertical specimens under specific test conditions. Results are defined as oxygen index (OI) values.

The test tube is held vertically inside a transparent chimney, where the oxygen and nitrogen mixture flows. The upper end of the test piece is ignited and the fire behavior is then observed, noting the period during which combustion continues or the length of the burned test piece. The estimation of the OI is carried out by testing a series of specimens in different volumetric fractions of oxygen.
